This could be the shortest post I’ve ever written…the answer, of course, is YES.
When I talk to people about the seasonal nature of my work, the expectation seems to be that the two extremely busy periods for me are summer and Christmas. That’s largely true, however, while summer dates are often booked up as much as two years in advance (I know, I too wish I was this organised), I’m amazed every year how the festive season is ALWAYS left until the last minute. I mean, it happens every year, around the same time 😉 so you’d think this would be the bit that every pub, restaurant and winter festival has got nailed!
No. Every year, I look at November, December and New Year’s eve with a little anxiety as they approach and my calendar still isn’t bursting with bookings. And then…it happens; suddenly, then flood gates open and before I know it, it’s the 1st Jan and I’m absolutely knackered, fingers tired, throat raw, wondering where Christmas went.
And actually it isn’t just Christmas. My calendar is, in truth, a constant mix of things booked seemingly eons ago, and things that someone approached me about last week. That’s life in the creative sector! There’s a helluva lot of trust in the universe to balance things out and fill your calendar if you’re to survive!
The reason I write this today is to say - if you’re someone looking for a last minute musician, then don’t despair! We all have the odd date free (and sadly, we also get cancellations), so it’s always worth giving musicians a shout if you’re in need. You might be amazed at who answers the call…
